I had such a great time Thursday night (07/23/2015), at the Night on the Towns Event for the movie premiere of Paper Towns! To say that I was excited about the book and the movie would be an understatement compared to how obsessed I actually was. I had read the book last semester and I instantly feel in love with the story and how much I could relate to Quentin and Margo’s struggles as I had also just recently graduated high school. Because I felt such a personal connection to the story, I was so happy to hear that a movie adaptation was being made and was going to be out in the summer.
Throughout this past spring semester, my excitement obsession grew as I followed stalked the movie’s progress on Twitter, Instagram and SnapChat to get my daily fix. If you asked any of my family members about my feelings on the book or movie, they would agree that I was a little bit too enthusiastic, as I would try to bring it up in any and every conversation I had with them (#sorrynotsorry).
The Night on the Towns event included entrance to the premiere of the movie, an engraved locket, a special event poster, and the live screening of the worldwide question and answer interview with the cast and John Green, and also musical performances by Saint Motel and Nat and Alex Wolff. The day of the event, I was so excited I could barely focus on my pre-cal homework and naturally I had to tweet about it….AND THE MOVIE’S TWITTER REPLIED TO ME!!! [screams internally] Yeah, I was “freaking out, too” when I saw that.
I got to my local theater an hour early so I could get a good seat (I like to be smack dab in the middle) and I was really surprised to see that not very many people showed up, it was kind of weird. But I waited, watched, wept over the movie’s cinematic brilliance, and wanted to watch it all over again.
The movie was true to the book and even though some things had to be switched around or taken out for the adaptation, it was honestly a really great film and I really enjoyed it to say the least.
It’s hard to explain how much this book and movie mean to me and my feelings towards them, but the story has truly shown me a different perspective on how I live my life. Like Q, I’ve always had the set plan of going to college, starting a career, getting married, having kids and just living happily ever after. However, Margo’s way of thinking has helped me realize that not everything will work out the way you hope and if you’re not happy with the way things are, take action and change them.
Thanks for reading, I hope you’ve enjoyed my little obsessive rant. Comment your favorite part of the book or movie, I’d love to hear them!
